E-commerce SEO: how to optimise your category pages
Category pages often match what shoppers search for better than product pages do. Here is how to make them rank without getting in the way of buying.
Someone searching “men’s running shoes” wants to compare options, not view a single product. That makes your category page the natural match.
Write for the search and the shopper
Use a clear heading that matches how people search, and a short introduction that helps them choose. Put longer buying advice below the products so the shop stays easy to use.
Link categories together
Link to related and more specific categories, and make sure your menu reaches your important ones. Pages buried several clicks deep tend to struggle.
Control filters
Filters for size, colour and price can create huge numbers of near-identical addresses. Decide which combinations deserve their own page, and keep the rest out of the index.
Handle empty and seasonal categories
Don’t delete a category that has search demand just because stock is low. Keep the page live and point shoppers to the closest alternatives.
