Product page SEO for online stores: what actually matters

Copied manufacturer descriptions and missing details keep many product pages from ranking. Focus on these few things first.

In this article

Product pages target people close to buying, so small improvements can matter a great deal.

Write your own descriptions

If your description is the same as on every other store, there is little reason for Google to prefer yours. Describe who the product suits and why they would choose it.

Answer buyers’ questions

Include size, materials, delivery, returns and anything customers regularly ask. Reviews add useful detail in the words buyers really use.

Use good images with useful alt text

Show the product clearly from several angles, keep the files small, and describe each image in plain words.

Add product structured data

Marking up price, availability and reviews helps search engines understand the page and can earn richer listings.

Plan for out-of-stock products

If an item is coming back, keep the page and say when. If it’s gone for good, redirect to the closest alternative.
